Hello,
I was at the Grand Rapids quilting Show, unfortunately without my camera. Many lovely quilts and I really enjoyed it. Did you happen to take a picture of a quilt with trees in a forest? It looked like they were sewn in strips. I thought it was lovely and a really neat concept. If so could you email me the picture?
Thanks, Ria

Nonnie, I really love the quilt. It is very pretty and this is something that I would hang up during the holidays. I don't know that much about colors because I have trouble matching them myself. I agree with another persons comment teach your husband to quilt so that he can pick the colors he wants.

Jackie...
I think all colors can go in the same quilt but VALUE is what makes or break the color scheme. If everything reads medium then the colors mush together. I take my glasses off whenever I want to check the values as well as take a black and white picture/ scan of the block or quilt. It helps a lot. I also think working with fabrics over time your color sense improves.

I also came to realize that colors have LIFE spans. Which really impacts the way you can use your fabrics in a quilt. By this I mean the fabric manufactures have changed colors, styles, finish to the fabric so fabric you purchased even five years ago you have a hard time matching up to to other fabrics. Results you have to buy more fabrics. It is a BIG CONSPIRACY. ;) HEE HEE.

SANDY,
I love reading color and design books, they have become my bed time reading since you and Jaye started your design series. I think they work themselves into my dreams.

Yes sage is grey-green and yes that is a color... green is modified by silver or grey. The middle picture of the silver green bushes in life look sage/ silvery in color looks great against the darker green (blue) leaves.

But the best advice you and Jaye gave out is MAKE VISUAL DESIGN DECISIONS, VISUALLY. That works for me all the time.

Nonnie

Nonnie, this is a great response to my original post! I love that you started out evaluating the colors of nature and then took what you'd observed into your fabric stash. I just started reading a Joen Wolfrom book on design this evening and like that she starts out in nature; I'm looking forward to seeing how she plays that out. As you saw in my post and now you're taking even further in yours, greens are very tricky! I like your approach here--separating them into blue-greens and yellow-greens. And you'd noted that one of my greens looked gray to you--and in a certain way, it is. It's a light sage green, or a green-grey (grey-green?). I don't recall what next week's color scheme is or I'd give you a hint... :-)

Wow,you have a lot of greens. I am not into "matchy matchy" but I do think you need to choose wisely to coordinate well. I think making a monochromatic would be challenging to create enough interest and contrast and still be pleasing.

Nonnie, my question to you is how do you feel about matchy-matchy in decorating your bedroom. The quilt is beautiful and I am inclined to be a person of high contrast - that's just who I am. I really like the original picture (that background looks almost white) and the raffle quilt - so I would vote for going lighter. I agree with Laura, use hubby's color choice for leaves or borders. Make pillows from the dark color. He'll still get to enjoy the color.

I think your instincts are right. You should go with a lighter background color because there isn't enough contrast between the dark background your husband chose and the leaf fabrics. You can honor his choice by using the fabric he chose as another leaf fabric, or in the thin borders and binding on the quilt.

I think your husband wants that color in the quilt, so put it in the quilt. But using that color as the background would be overwhelming, INHO.

Hi Nonnie! I live my life plagued with uncertainty! You are not alone. I'd go with a lighter, less mottled creamy background. I don't think the one your husband picked goes with the other fabrics. It stands out too much when it should blend. Go with your instincts since you'll be spending a lot of time making this. Good luck!

Nonnie, I saw you posted on Peacebrook that your guild was sponsoring the Super Seminar. I figured you meant the Ricky Tims one. It is so, so great and worth the money. If he ever comes back to California I want to go again. It was the most peaceful, interesting 2 and 1/2 days. I also managed to spend a lot of money!

Enjoyed the episode, as always. Thanks for giving us a peak into the scrap bag thing. I've seen those in a lot of places. If I was an avid scrap quilter, I could see where that might be useful, but probably nothing I'd ever buy either.

Thanks for inviting us over for Thanksgiving, Nonnie! Sorta made me feel like I was having a second celebration myself. I'll be checking out your reviews on the Martha Stewart cookbooks--I'm actually in a whole cooking rebirth sort of thing. Now that the kids have moved out, I've decided I really enjoy cooking. They're really not happy about my sense of timing, LOL.

Sounds like it was a great workshop! I have a stitch-in-the-ditch foot, both a regular one and one made for my acu-feed system (Janome's built-in walking foot, basically). I love those. Very useful!

I am glad you ladies liked the DEAR JANE podcast ... it was a great trip down memory lane.... I think people should enjoy their quilting experience and make what speaks to them. I sure Jane Stickel would have picked modern fabrics if they had been available to her. I think she was adventuresome type person just from the different forms of her blocks.

Thanks for listening

Nonnie, I really enjoyed this Dear Jane episode!!! I LOVE your attitude.. It's MY quilt and I'll do what I want! I've often looked at others' Dear Jane's and thought I'd like to do one in a really strange colour scheme just to throw people off.. lol! One of my favourite books has a male character named Jamie, and he has flaming red hair, so I thought of doing mine in shades of red and orange and yellow, and calling it Dear Jamie.. hehe. One day I'll start it.. I do have a list of blocks I'm keeping that I'll include. I would never make one out of civil war traditional prints because frankly there are already enough quilts on the planet that look exactly like that!

I really appreciated this episode. I started a Dear Jane at least ten years ago. I made sixty something blocks before setting it aside for a long time. I already have all my fabrics picked and bagged in rows. I went with similar looking fabrics, but not necessarily reproductions. I have a huge binder that all my blocks are stored in. I used every type of technique, and I also learned a lot. I learned to paper piece and also to do reverse applique. I assumed I would hand quilt it when I first started, but after so many years I now realize I will have to machine quilt it, I can no longer hand quilt large quilts. You have really inspired me to get back to doing this quilt. I would love to see some pictures of your blocks. Linda Franz also has some wonderful hand piecing tutorials, I am going to look up the Ginny Beyer ones you mentioned. Blessings.

One of my favorite salads in summer...but my tomatoes had blight this year booohooo. First time in 3 years I've had to BUY tomatoes in the summer, boy have costs gone up! It's still a great salad and I love to cut them up smaller and stack on a slice of baguette..yummmm.
