More Art Quilt Challenge Pictures

Posted in Just talking, Quilts, FREE MOTION QUILTING, QUILT SHOWS by nonniesquiltingdreams on April 15th, 2012

I ran out of room on WORDPRESS for pictures so I am adding some pictures here on my POD-BEAN blog. These quilts are from an Art Challenge that will be sent to exhibits in Europe. The quilters made quilts based on the style of various Master Painters, including Georgia O Keefe, Van Gogh, Klimt, Hokusari, Hundertwasser,and Frankenhalter. I love the various hand stitches t used and find inspiration from the embellishments and free motion quilting used by the quilters.

YOU can find more pictures on my WORD PRESS blog on my original posts!  I am also adding my TWO CENTS about what I think about some of the pieces.  AS you know I have an opinion about just about everything.

26-Art Quilt Challenge Inspired by Master Painters

. This piece is very detailed piece of folk art.  It is nicely executed piece and the workmanship (which can not be well viewed unless the photo is seen in the original form and zoomed in) was well done.  My only quibble with this piece might be that there is not a lot of value variances  that allow you to actually visualize all  work that went into the piece.  I personally feel the dark background hid the stitches and camouflaged many of the patches.  This is my personal opinion and is based on my own vision deficits that makes it difficult to see the details,  I am sure not everyone will feel the same seeing this quilt.

-Art Quilt Challenge Inspired by Master Painters

In my estimation this is a well execute piece of abstract fiber art.   I do not know if this how heavily influenced it was by the original art work as I am not familiar with abstract paintings.  What I like about the piece is the balance of light, medium and dark values.  I like the use of the different types of fabrics.  I especially like the use of the decorative stitches to thread paint and quilt the piece.  I personally do not think quilters take advantage and use the wonderful decorative stitches our machines can deliver.  I do want to say over and above using the stitches they highlighted the various shapes in the piece.  The stitches were well executed and having done this type of work before I know how hard that is to accomplish.  The starts and stops of the stitching was invisible.

-Art Quilt Challenge Inspired by Master Painters

I found this piece to be a mystery and a wonderment;  I could not figure out how it was done.  Is the face a  photo on fabric, a drawing from an exceptional artist I could not tell even close up to the quilt (It was mounted about a foot above my head at a difficult angle to see)  .... and then there is the FMQ.  On close examination in zoom I noted the FMQ was done with very fine thread of matching color to the piece.  It added shine and highlights to the quilt.  It was subtle and understated but I think perfect for this piece.        ..

-Art Quilt Challenge Inspired by Master Painters

Any body want to go to this cafe in Europe?  Looks like a Starry Night, a night perfect, for glass of wine and a really great dessert.  The FMQ quilting mimics the patchwork. I think this piece was a combination of pieced work, applique and painting details with a ink product.  I do not think the quilter could  have gotten such a detail and painter effect in this quilt without manipulating the fabric with dyes or inks.  I do not think paint was used because the colors were soaked into fabric and not sitting on top of the fabrics as paints are likely to do.

I reviewed this on the WORD PRESS blog post .... but I repeated the picture here... cause I reallllllly liked it.

HAPPY QUILTING,

NONNIE

Reading to my grandson….

Posted in Just talking, podcasting attempts, reading for kids by nonniesquiltingdreams on December 18th, 2011

Every night someone in the family reads bedtime stories to my grandson.  I recently started recording me reading to him and burning the readings to a cD.  We then put the cD in the player and he listens to it as he falls asleep.  I did this for my daughter when she was young... I used a tape recorder then.

I am posting the readings for other children to enjoy.  The include me reading, some descriptions of the pictures I am seeing; comments or questions I make when I read.  My grandson has access to the books, on the cD, so that he can read along, whenever we ride in the car or he is "RESTING" pre-Nap.

Actually I am hoping this will spur others to learn how to creat mp3 files so that they too can save their voices for their families and their future kids and grand-kids.  IF I CAN DO IT, anyone can do it.

Caprese Salad like my Mother use to make!

Posted in Uncategorized, Just talking by nonniesquiltingdreams on August 11th, 2011

August 8, 2011,

Summer Caprese Salad like MY Mother Made!

Slice lots of summer tomatoes... light salt and pepper, good olive oil, good wine or balsamic vinegar.  Set aside in a cool place or refrigerate but a lot of people think you should avoid refrigerating tomatoes.  I often add chopped basil, parsley and a little garlic at this point.  My daughter does not like the garlic so sometimes I make her separate salad. (Chill for an hour at the least.)

Slices of YOUR favorite fresh mozzarella.

Washed and dried fresh basil.

To assemble:   Stack tomato slice with mozzarella with basil leaf between.  I like to stack several slices of tomato with a toothpick through all.  A small basil leaf on the top.

Enjoy

Episode 23: Just nattering !

Posted in Uncategorized, Just talking, Quilts, Quilting and Tearing my Hair, charity quilts by nonniesquiltingdreams on August 9th, 2011

Fast, short episode because I have been working on charity quilts.  Referred back to my recent posts on Word Press, specifically my latest quilt ... THE FABRIC TALKS TO ME.  Pictures on Flicker and Word-Press.  Also reviewed Alex Anderson DVD about learning to quilt.

My borders are driving me NUTS!

Posted in Uncategorized, Just talking, Quilts, Quilting and Tearing my Hair, charity quilts by nonniesquiltingdreams on July 25th, 2011

mileaminite-green.jpg

This is the quilt I reapplied the borders for the THIRD TIME... (Sorry it is such a crummy picture but I had to hang it out side on the clothes line in order to get any picture.  As you can tell picture styling is not my strong suite. )  Anyways I reapplied the borders three time... simple little 4 inch wide borders... Should be easy right....

NO, NO, NO!  I did not have my usual work area to stretch out the quilt to measure the borders so I measured by folding in  half and then measured (twice.)  I then cut the borders.  Dang if they were not too short by two inches.  I had more fabric so I remeasured and re-cut the fabric leaving extra.  I then marked the appropriate measurements and pinned from the center outward.   I sewed on the borders and then laid it on a bed.  The borders waved like a flag in a hurricane.  Had to rip them off again.  Remarked them using my old technique of marking them every 12 inches on border and quilt top, then matching all the marks at the 12 inches.  Sewed them on and FINALLY they are laying flat.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I  had a blast this week sewing at CHRISTMAS IN JULY sew in at Elaine's Quilty Shop in Hadley.   The food was great, three different salads, and a wonderful banana cake for dessert.  We sewed from 10 am til 5 pm.  I corrected the above border and finally got it right and then sewed pinwheels using the MISSOURI QUILT SHOP technique.  They were so much fun... but boy are those bias edges hard to deal with.
I am making my pinwheels using 6-1/2 inch squares ( Yes, it will be a charity quilt.)  Once the pinwheels were made I squared them up to 7-1/2 inch unfinished blocks.  I will be posting pictures in the future.  I will probably design quilt top in a simpler pattern, then the ones I have seen on the internet lately.  Just playing with the idea.
Speaking of designing..... I think I am going to break down and buy myself an Electric Quilt 7.... I have been missing my EQ since the computer crash.
Well this is it for today... happy quilting.
Nonnie
( The pictured quilt is a lot cuter in person than picture indicates. )
Sorry, but I only post pictures on Word-Press. I save my bandwidth here for the podcast. To load your MP3 file, Right click, select SAVE TO TARGET OR Link and save to your computer. Just remember where you save your file to. I loose more files by forgetting.
Link to the blocks I make from my experimental stash fabrics.
